Contraindications to Sports Massage

There are times when massage could be detrimental rather than beneficial to you.  Below is a list of some of the contraindications to sports massage. 

  • Contagious skin disorders: Impetigo, herpes, fungal infections, boils, erysipelas

  • Non contagious skin disorders: Acne, eczema, hives

  • Acute traumas: Burns, open wounds, sores, haemotoma, fractures, sprains, or complete break of bones

  • Inflammation or swelling of an area: Bursitis

  • Circulatory conditions: varicose veins, DVT

  • Viral conditions: TB, flu, pneumonia, common cold

  • Haemophilia

  • Cancer

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Shingles

  • Hypertension (requiring medication)

  • Severe diabetes

  • Pregnancy


If during the initial consultation we believe massage would be contraindicated you may be referred to your G.P or other healthcare professional.
